“Fuel will rise in price, basic food items will not”

Minister of Trade, Tourism and Telecommunications, Tatjana Matic, has said that the prices of basic food items will not change, but that there will have to be some adjustment of the price of petroleum products.

She told Tanjug that the reason was the fact that due to the increase in the price of crude oil the wholesale prices of petroleum products had already exceeded the existing retail prices.

“The supply of basic food items and their prices will remain stable and the same as they are now. When it comes to petroleum products, we must bear in mind that their price is formed on the global market and that, for the petroleum companies that operate in our country, prices must be economically acceptable and that they must be adjusted,“ Matic said.

She recalled that the validity of the existing regulation on the restriction of the prices of Euro-diesel and unleaded petrol would expire on March 13, and she stated that the competent ministries were in the process of discussing the new protective price of petroleum products with the Association of Petroleum Companies of Serbia and NIS.

„When the first Regulation was adopted, we were all aware of the fact that there were major disturbances on the mercantile exchange and that the price of petroleum was changing from day to day. Now the wholesale price has in some cases exceeded the retail price, so there is a negative margin. As a state, we are aware of this, so it is necessary to adjust this price and to understand the sellers, but on the other hand we will protect the market and ensure supply,“ the minister of trade said.

„When it comes to basic food items, we do not expect any changes there. The regulation on limiting the prices of basic food items has been in force for a long time and it will be valid until May. There will be no changes. There are no fears for the supply of our market with food, there is enough of it and prices will remain stable,“ Matic said.

She pointed out that domestic traders, even in times of the covid crisis, had showed that our market could rely on them.

Minister Matic noted that the announced abolition of covid passes would be very important for our country, because a record number of foreign visits and more than 1.5 billion euros of income in tourism were recorded last year.
