Economists: Snap elections are expensive and they carry long-term consequences

Calling snap elections in Serbia in the spring of this year, according to economists, would leave both short-term and long-term bad consequences on the budget and economic growth in the country.

Professor of the Faculty of Economics in Belgrade, Milojko Arsic, has told the Beta agency that „the elections would have no significant impact on the economic growth this year, which will be from 3.5 to 4 percent, because the campaign is likely to be short, and the economic policy for this year is already adopted.“

„Since it is certain that the same political party that is now in power will win those elections, this would leave negative long-term consequences on the economy, because it would mean continuation of the form of government that has existed for six or seven years and which gives poor results,“ said Arsic.

Proof of this is, as he said, that in the period from 2012 to 2018, Serbia achieved poorer results in the economy than other countries of the Central and Eastern European (CEE).

„The main reason why Serbia’s economy is lagging behind compared to the region is weak institutions, the widespread practice of non-compliance with regulations, the lack of fight against corruption, insufficient political stability and other reasons,“ Arsic said, adding that Serbia is 105th in the world on the World Bank’s list based on the quality of governance.
