After 30 years, Serbia exports wheat to Egypt again

Export of wheat from Serbia to Egypt should begin in December this year, said Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management Branislav Nedimovic.

At a press conference, he said that through the project of the Ministry, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and the Association „Zita Srbije“ a business deal was reached enabling Serbia, after 30 years, to receive the certificate for export of wheat to Egypt.

„In the last week of November, a technical check of Serbian warehouse capacities for export of wheat is planned, after which, the first quantities of wheat from Serbia will start being exported to Egypt, which is currently the largest buyer of wheat in the world,“ said Nedimovic.

He added that, unlike in previous years, wheat in Serbia now has high quality.

„This year, more than 3 million tons of wheat were produced on 16,000 hectares, of which about two million tons will be exported,“ said Nedimovic.

The minister said that negotiations had also been taking place about the export of corn to China and Indonesia, and about „directing Serbian crops to the best-paying markets“.
