Serbia lacks one million piglets, customs duty on import abolished
The decision of the Government of Serbia, at the initiative of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management, adopted this year abolished customs duties on the import of piglets for fattening of up to 50 kilograms.
The tariff of RSD 8.7 per kilogram for piglets and cattle for fattening was also abolished, which, according to competent minister Jelena Tanaskovic, should help improve the livestock population in Serbia.
„This measure was adopted as a measure to help our agricultural producers with the idea of restoring Serbia’s livestock population. According to the estimates and analyses for the previous two years, which were done by the Statistical Office of the Republic of Serbia, the Chamber of Commerce of Serbia, as well as the Ministry of Agriculture, we currently lack about a million piglets to fill the capacity of the farms“, said Minister Tanaskovic.
She added that in the previous period the livestock population was reduced and that the strategic goal of the Ministry of Agriculture and the entire country this year was to increase the livestock population, whereby the emphasis would be on pig breeding and cattle breeding.
Tanaskovic pointed out that these measures would enable producers to import quality piglets in the short term, within one year of their application.
According to her, due to the cancellation of customs duties and tariffs, the state will be at a loss of about one billion dinars, which was the amount of income from these two sources last year.
Namely, most piglets are imported to Serbia from the European Union.
