„We want full and cheap legalization in order to COLLECT PROPERTY TAX“

The President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic, said that a solution was being prepared for the „full and cheap“ legalization of illegally built facilities, in order to collect property taxes.

„We do not need one-time and fast revenue, we do not want this to be a source of corruption and profit for municipal and city officials, but to have registered facilities whose price will increase, and at the same time people will solve their property-legal issues,“ Vucic said.

He pointed out that, following legalization, state will actually collect significantly more property tax, because out of 2.5 million illegal buildings, there will be two million more newly registered buildings.

He said that 250,000 buildings were legalized in five years, which is „terribly small number“, and that a number of people pay property taxes on those facilities, albeit on reduced square metres, without auxiliary facilities included.

He estimated that legalization of around ten percent of the facilities will not be possible and those facilities will have to be removed.

According to Vucic, there are many problems in state structure regarding execution of legalization, and it is no coincidence that this problem has not been solved for decades, but certain improvement has started since 2015 and this problem will be solved.
