Vodafone licenced for transit operations in Serbia

The British telecommunication company Vodafone will for the time being conduct transit traffic via Serbia between the Western Europe and Turkey, the „Politika“ daily reports.

The Regulatory Agency for Electronic Communications and Postal Services (RATEL) announced that it has issued a license to the British company Vodafone for electronic communications in the field of public communication networks and services. Although this information is perceived by the general public as if a new player is coming to the market of telecommunication services, the minister in charge Rasim Ljajic states for the „Politika“ daily that Vodafone is not the fourth mobile operator in Serbia.

They are inscribed in the register in order to be able to conduct business activity that does not include fixed and mobile telephony, for which special licenses are required. It is a signal transit between the Western Europe and Turkey which will bring money to Serbia from collection of stipulated fees, Ljajic has stated.

According to a statement by RATEL, the Vodafone branch in Belgrade will use the network exclusively for optical signal transit through Serbia.
