There are no major layoffs in Serbia yet, but…

The war in Ukraine has not yet caused major problems in the operation of factories in Serbia, although there is fear of the dismissal of workers, said Secretary of the Council of the Association of Independent Trade Unions of Serbia (SSSS), Zoran Mihajlovic.

He told Beta agency that factories employing hundreds or thousands of workers in the automotive industry have been facing problems for two years due to the coronavirus pandemic and weaker sale of motor vehicles.

The biggest factories of foreign investor in Serbia, as Mihajlovic recalled, are mainly manufacturers of components for the automotive industry.

„Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the car manufacturers’ sales have been reduced, and now the war in Ukraine added to that crisis, and the raw material supply chains have been broken,“ Mihajlovic said.

He added that there were no major layoffs yet, but that there was fear of jobs being lost in the crisis caused by the war in Ukraine.

Mihajlovic pointed out that, if the war crisis lasted longer, dismissals of workers could be expected.
