Serbs annually throw 35 kilograms of food per capita
According to a study published by Novi Sad based Scientific Institute of Food Technology, nearly 250,000 tons of food goes to waste in Serbia annually, and one third comes from households.
According to research, every citizen of Serbia, regardless of age, throws 35 kilograms of food a year, worth about RSD20,000.
As they stipulated, almost half of this quantity can be avoided by proper storage and an appropriate plan of shopping. The rest represents food waste that cannot be used, such as egg shells, bones and fruit seeds.
If this problem was eliminated, a four-member family would save up to RSD80,000 a year.
Worldwide, 1.3 billion tons of food ends up on landfill a year.
