SERBIAN monastery among the seven MOST ENDANGERED sites
Visoki Decani, the monastery of the Serbian Orthodox Church in Kosovo and Metohija is included in the list of the seven most endangered cultural heritage sites in Europe for 2021, comprised by the pan-European Federation for the Preservation of Cultural Heritage „Europa Nostra“.
„Built in the first half of the 14th century, this Serbian Orthodox Christian monastery is one of the most important medieval religious monuments in Europe. The monastery complex is surrounded by a beautiful forest that forms part of a cultural landscape inseparable from its invaluable cultural heritage,“ the website „Europa Nostra“ reports.
It is pointed out that the monastery has been on the UNESCO’s list of World Heritage in Danger since 2006, that it is under the protection of KFOR peacekeepers, but it still faces threats due to unresolved legal and institutional issues.
