Serbia to receive EUR97 million from EU funds

An agreement on the use of EUR97 million from the EU aid program to Serbia for the preparation for IPA membership has been signed in Brussels today, of which EUR49.6 million is intended for construction of gas interconnector between Serbia and Bulgaria and around EUR29 million for environmental protection in number of towns in Serbia.

The agreement has been signed by the Serbian Minister for European Integrations Jadranka Joksimovic and the European Commissioner Johannes Hahn who particularly pointed out that the gas interconnector with Bulgaria will strengthen Serbia’s independence and supply with energy-generating products from different sources.

Hahn wanted to emphasize that construction of that gas interconnector would „strengthen Serbia’s independence in gas supply, and this is not directed against nor it benefits anyone”.

“I think, the European Commissioner for Enlargement Policy has stated, “that it is in core interest of a certain country to be as independent as possible when it comes to sources and supply routes of energy-generating products, thus we are talking about both political and economic independence”.
