Serbia buys 18 sets of electric trains from Stadler
Serbia has ordered 18 electric train compositions of the „Flirt“ type from the Swiss train manufacturer Stadler Rail, of the total value of CHF 117 million (EUR 113 million), the media reported.
A spokeswoman for the company confirmed to the Swiss media that this referred to 18 four-piece sets, but she said that the details of the business deal, „at the client’s request“, would only be revealed within the signing of the contract in February.
St. Galler Tagblatt newspaper previously announced that the business deal was worth CHF 117 million and that the buyer of electric motor sets was the Serbian state-run railway company Srbija Voz.
The purchase of trains is financed by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) with a loan that exceeds 100 million euros, while the rest will be paid by the budget of Serbia, the newspaper reports.
The Bussnang-based company in eastern Switzerland has won the business deal in competition with France’s Alstom and the Italian consortium gathered around Hitachi Rail, and the manufacturer will be Stadler’s plant in Poland.
Serbia already owns 21 sets of modular electric trains of the „Flirt“ type, and Srbija Voz also ordered two three-part sets of a two-storey train of the „Kiss“ type.
