Salaries regulate the labour market: Serbs go to work in Croatia, Croats go to Germany…

Hotel managements throughout Europe, especially in our region, are facing shortages of labour force and rapid technological changes, as it was concluded at the HOW Festival, the European Conference on Hotel Operations, held recently in Porec.

The conference brought together more than 450 participants, mostly hotel managers, including the representatives of large global hotel groups.

Conference organizer, Marina Franolic, points out that the most attention of the participants was attracted by the topic of hiring and retaining workers, that is, the lack of workforce in the hotel industry, which is a problem that the whole region faces, reports Novac.hr.

It was pointed out that, for example, Serbia is ‘struggling’ with the problem of labour force outflow mostly to Slovenia and Croatia, because it has the lowest average salaries in our area, while Croatian companies face the departure of people to Germany and Ireland.

Hotel managers expect an increase in quota for foreign labour import, but they emphasize that this is tilting at windmills, because the examples of some large hotel firms in Croatia show that when they try to get higher quotas for labour force from abroad, the problem of the number of unemployed people in Croatia is pointed out to them, which is why the state refuses the import.
