Reconstruction suspended: The Republic Square is, in fact, an archaeological site

Reconstruction of the Republic Square has been completely suspended due to the archaeological site and deadline for completion of works of 420 days will certainly be missed, B92 reports.

There were no workers to be found on the square, the construction site is closed and only one guard monitors it, who eventually let the crew of “Prva” TV station to record the current state.

Authorities from the Institute for the Protection of Cultural Monuments, who should be on the construction site, did not confirm what exactly was found.

Allegedly, remains of the Stambol Gate have been found, and rumor has it that Roman graves have been found as well, which allegedly contain many objects. However, this was not confirmed by the Institute for the Protection of Cultural Monuments.

A big question remains: Will the deadline for completion of reconstruction be extended, since it included a period of 420 days? Until archeologists provide their opinion, it is also unknown for how many days the deadline will be missed,

Deputy Mayor Goran Vesic announced that the Republic Square will receive a completely new look following reconstruction, jardinières will be moved, granite boards will be embedded, there will be a lot of greenery, plenty of benches, the street will be at the same level, it will not be separated and one will be able to drive in a slow mode of 10 km per hour.

“It will become a real city square that developed cities in Europe have,” Vesic said.
