Orbovic: In Serbia, 38 workers get killed annually

President of the Association of Independent Trade Unions of Serbia (SSSS), Ljubisav Orbovic, has said that there is a high mortality rate among workers in Serbia and that, on average, 38 workers get killed at work annually.

At the conference „Safety and Health are Workers’ Rights“, he said that accidents and deaths that happened in recent months in Serbia raised serious concerns of the workers and trade unions, adding that it was necessary to consider the reasons and ways to stop the trend.

Orbovic said that it was positive that some companies were taking care about the protection and safety of workers at work, but he added that there were those who did not respect such rights.

He pointed out that some employers did not take sufficient care of the protection of workers and they hired them on an as-needed basis, so the workers were not ready for work, they did not have basic equipment and they were not educated about safety at work.

According to him, it is necessary to impose severe penalties on employers, but also to sanction workers who do not comply with the regulations. „Most of the injuries and deaths occur among illegal workers, and they account for about 30 percent of the total number of cases,“ he said.

State Secretary of the Ministry of Construction Zoran Lakicevic said that in previous years the number of construction sites had increased significantly in Serbia. He pointed out that the number of construction permits had increased by about 30 percent since 2016, and that in two years the number of construction sites had grown by over 100 percent.
