NASA and BioSense are „rationalizing“ Serbian farmland

The Novi Sad BioSense Institute, in cooperation with NASA, the University of Grand Valley, the State and Technological Universities in Michigan, is developing a system for monitoring and rational use of water resources and land in Serbia, the institute announced.

As it is stated, the new project will help Serbian agriculture cope with climate change and use water resources and land as rationally as possible.

„Together with our American colleagues, we will analyse satellite images of Vojvodina, try to answer the question of how climate change will affect domestic agriculture and the environment, and what specifically we can do to increase production efficiency and keep biodiversity,“ said assistant director of innovation and cooperation with the economy, Oskar Marko.

In a press release, director of the BioSense Institute, Vladimir Crnojevic, says he believes that this is another important step in the process of digitalization of agriculture, whose driving force is the BioSense Institute.

„Currently, the most important starting point for the development of agriculture is data. By sharing data and knowledge through cooperation with top scientific institutions and investing in research, intellectual capital is multiplied, new ideas and solutions are created that will make agriculture more efficient,“ he said.

BioSense warned that unpredictable summer precipitation led to a change in the water level, which was declining in the southern Danube river basin, a valuable resource for agriculture.

In order for the agricultural sector to properly adapt to climate change, they believe that it is important to understand trends in agriculture, i.e. shifting the date of sowing and harvesting, changes in sowing structure, crop rotation, duration of the agricultural season.

It has been announced that the project will last until 2024, and the latest information and results of the project will be available on the website of the BioSense Institute.
