Minister about Fiat’s workers: They can earn three times as much

Minister of Economy Andjelka Atanaskovic has said that the state, which undertook by contract to subsidize the production of an electric car in Kragujevac, did not know about Stellantis’ plans for workers and that it will try to find the best possible solution for people who did not accept any offer.

„It was up to the company’s management to decide what to do with the workers while they were changing machines and arranging halls for the start of production of an electric car. We did not know what they were thinking about,“ Atanaskovic told the Politika daily.

She stated that the contract did not include anything that Stellantis offered to the workers, but only that the new model would start to be produced in the middle of 2024.

The company offered the workers of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) Serbia to move to one of four factories in Italy, Germany, Poland and Slovakia during that time, or to voluntarily leave the company with a severance pay.

Atanaskovic replied negatively to the question of whether there is a possibility for workers to stay in Serbia on paid leave and receive 65 percent of the salary, without working while waiting for the production of a new model to begin.

„They could earn three times more (than in Serbia). Now it is just a matter of whether our people want to go. Maybe when they think about it, they will accept the offer. But to get the money, to sit around and do nothing, that definitely does not exist anywhere.”

Our mentality needs to change a little, we are used to living in another world, Atanaskovic said.
