60,000 construction workers from Serbia in the Western countries and there will be even more

More than 60,000 construction workers and craftsmen of all profiles from Serbia are working in the Western countries and in Russia, and since January 2019, a new wave of country's workforce will depart, the Novosti daily reports.

Namely, bilateral agreements between our country and Sweden, Austria and Germany will come into force as of next year, and if yet another brigade of craftsmen is to depart abroad, Serbia will no longer have issue with construction, but with maintenance of existing facilities as well.

The demand for workers is huge, since housing crisis is high both in our country and abroad, Goran Rodic of the Chamber of Construction Industry of Serbia says.

Painters, scaffold workers, carpenters, plasterers, all those who know these jobs are leaving. Two million apartments in Serbia require serious renovation and we will have a problem with maintenance of older buildings. Good craftsmen will be impossible to find.

Major portion of the workforce in construction industry does not have the necessary qualifications and experience, and crisis in construction industry has been ongoing for several years. Hiring workforce from abroad is still more expensive opposed to hiring domestic workers, Rodic concludes.
