Zijin has to pay RSD 1 million because of river pollution

The Zijin Copper Company will have to pay a million dinars in fines for river pollution.

Acting on the criminal complaint filed by the Regulatory Institute for Renewable Energy and the Environment (RERI) against the company Zijin Copper due to heavy metal pollution of the river Mali Pek in March 2021, the competent prosecutor’s office in Negotin ordered that the company and its director Jian Ximing have to pay RSD 1 million to charity because of the criminal offense of environmental pollution.

According to RERI’s press release, the Pek River, due to pollution in March 2021, caused by the activities of the company Zijin Copper, became blurry, red, copper and green in color, which, as they stated, upset the public.

They pointed out that they had hired the Institute for Mining and Metallurgy of Bor, which sampled sludge from the river, and the results showed that the sludge was extremely polluted due to high concentrations of pollutants.

„The amount of copper is 17 times higher than the prescribed amount, arsenic 3.5 times the prescribed value, and lead is found in almost twice the prescribed amount,“ the press release reads.
