Serbia spent 8 times more money on electricity import than last year

The amount paid by Serbia for electricity import in the first two months of this year is eight times higher compared to the same period last year, the editor of the magazine Macroeconomic Analyses and Trends (MAT), economist Ivan Nikolic, said today.

„In the first two months of this year, 86 million euros were allocated for the procurement of electricity from abroad, while last year that amount was ten million euros,“ Nikolic said.

The reason for the price difference, as he said, is not the higher electricity consumption in Serbia, but the fact that electricity was imported during the winter period when its price was higher.

In January and February, he said, EUR 575 million was spent more than in the same period last year on gas and petroleum import due to the rise in the price of these energy products.

According to the magazine „Macroeconomic Analyses and Trends“, total industrial production in Serbia in January 2022 dropped by 2.2 percent year-on-year and 0.7 percent in February, and the main reason is a marked decline in the sector of electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply, which amounted to 18.6 percent in January, and 25.8 percent in February.

When it comes to import to Serbia, the fastest growing is energy import, which, in February 2022, reached 92 percent above the previous year’s average.

In the first two months of this year, the value of import exceeded the value of export more than twice, and the main components of that growth are the import of crude petroleum and gas, coke, petroleum products, chemical products and electricity, according to MAT’s experts.

The main reason for higher electricity import to Serbia than usual is the collapse of the electrical energy system at the end of last year.
