Serbia is to ban plastic bags
Serbia will ban the use of thin plastic bags and introduce mandatory payment of biodegradable bags, announced the Ministry of Environmental Protection.
According to Politika, in that ministry, Serbia, although not a member of the EU, will apply all measures of the recently adopted Plastics Directive.
This Directive from February this year, limits the maximum annual consumption of bags to 90 per person, by the end of 2019.
„We are in constant communication with large retail chains, as well as with the NGO sectors, in order to influence the development of environmental awareness of citizens on this particular issue,“ said the Ministry of Environmental Protection.
According to unofficial estimates of the trade sector, about 20 million euros are spent annually in Serbia for the purchase of plastic bags, and citizens spend on average seven bags a day.
