Serbia is half cheaper than the EU

Consumer prices in Serbia are half lower than the average prices in the European Union, Eurostat said.

Retail prices in Serbia are 51% of the European average, while consumers pay less for consumer goods in Macedonia – 47% and Bulgaria – 48%. In BiH, Albania and Romania, consumer prices are 52% of the EU average, in Montenegro 55%, in Hungary 62%, Croatia 67%, and in Greece 84%.

In the EU, the highest prices are in Denmark (142%), Luxembourg (127%), Ireland and Sweden (125%), Finland 122% and Great Britain 117%. Even more expensive goods and services are paid by the citizens of Iceland – 166 percent, followed by Switzerland with 159 percent of the EU average and Norwegians with 143 percent.

In Serbia, food and drink prices are at the 72 percent of the EU average, which is slightly lower than in Bosnia and Herzegovina (75 percent) and Montenegro (79 percent), as well as Bulgaria (73 percent).

Prices of alcoholic beverages and tobacco in Serbia are at 52% of the EU average. They are the cheapest in Macedonia (41%), while they are more expensive in BiH (53%), Albania (52%), Bulgaria (56%), Montenegro (63%) and Romania (69%). They are the most expensive in Iceland – 228 percent of the EU average and Norway – 226 percent.

Clothes in Serbia cost close to the EU average (93 percent). In the following countries, they are cheaper than in Serbia: Macedonia (81%), Bosnia and Herzegovina (88%), Bulgaria (80%), Hungary (84%), and Great Britain (87%). Electric home appliances in Serbia cost above the EU average – 108 percent. Similar prices are paid by the citizens of BiH and Albania (106%) and Macedonia (103%), while in Montenegro their value in retail is 97% of the EU average.

When it comes to prices in restaurants and hotels, in Serbia they are almost half the EU average (51 percent).
