Raspberries „exceed“ RSD 400/kg but there is no one to pick them – seasonal workers from Albania and Mongolia

The record purchase price of raspberries reached RSD 430 per kilogram, and some varieties cost more than RSD 500. This was influenced by the decline in yields, and there are not enough pickers, so seasonal workers come from distant countries in Asia and Africa.

And while Serbian tourists are getting to know the Albanian coast more and more, raspberry pickers arrived from that country to the Ivanjica area for the first time. Miro Rajkovic from Prilike has plans for another group of foreign seasonal workers.

„I had two groups. One from Mongolia, which I was looking for, and the other from Albania. However, there is now a problem with the coronavirus in Mongolia, I do not know how long it will last since the infection has only just erupted in their country. If they can, they will come on 15th, and those from Albania have already come,“ says Miro.

In the Arilje region, 40 pickers from India were expected, however, due to covid, their arrival was canceled.

The high price of raspberries will affect the growth of areas under this fruit, but the need for agriculture is growing in Serbia, so the arrival of cheap labour force from Asia and Africa is planned.

„And they already have companies that import labour force and that form large apartment blocks, especially in Vojvodina, although the coronavirus has delayed that a bit,“ says Zoran Radovanovic of the expert group of the Ministry of Agriculture for raspberries.

„We have arranged for all this. We have the Law on Hiring Seasonal Workers, where a foreigner can, with a report to the Ministry of the Interior, the competent Police Administration, get the right to work during season and be fully insured in terms of pensions and health and people are safe, both those who hire him/her and those who work,“ says Branislav Nedimovic, Minister of Agriculture.

Farmers, they say, prefer seasonal workers from Serbia or the region because of their language, mentality, diet.

„But if there is a need, we will also have to look for foreigners. If there is no one else to work, then they will work,“ says Branko Djokic, a farmer from Brezna.

Albanians were attracted to Prilike by a daily allowance of thirty euros, with accommodation and food until the end of the harvest. And while in Serbia many unemployed people avoid working in the fields, from distant parts of the world, due to travel costs, seasonal workers will come to Serbia for at least six months.
