    One person saves four lives

One organ donor alone has saved four lives recently in Serbia. This is the first donor since the beginning of the implementation of the new Transplantation Act, according to which, starting from August 2, we are all potential organ donors in case of brain death, the Vecernje novosti daily reports.

Three patients, in the night between Sunday and Monday, at the Clinical Centre of Serbia, received the donated organs: the kidney, liver and heart, while the other kidney was transported to Novi Sad and transplanted into a patient at the Clinical Centre of Vojvodina.

All the patients are recovering well after the transplantation procedure. They got a chance for a new life owing to the family of one patient who gave consent to take his organs, since he was declared brain dead at the Clinical Centre of Serbia.

Under the new law, although all adults are potential donors, apart from those who declare in writing that they are explicitly against it, the immediate family, nevertheless, has a decisive role.

Since the beginning of the year, 48 transplantations have been done in Serbia: 28 kidneys, 12 livers and eight hearts were transplanted. Last year, for example, we had 40 donors, and 92 organs were transplanted: 62 kidneys, 23 livers and seven hearts.

The list of those waiting for organs, like anywhere in the world, is much longer than the number of donors, thus, for example, 40 patients in Serbia are currently waiting for the liver.
