Mihajlovic: Barriers at the borders undermine the competitiveness of the economy
Today, Zorana Mihajlovic, Minister of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure of Serbia, warned that non-physical barriers at the borders were undermining the competitiveness of the economy in the region and that that was a problem that should be resolved urgently.
At the Kopaonik Business Forum, she said that trains were waiting at the borders with the countries of the region for eight to ten hours, and at the borders with the European Union countries for as long as 15 hours.
„We are working hard to eliminate the physical barriers at the borders for the flow of goods and people, but non-physical barriers remain a big problem, and we all have to work harder to solve it,“ Mihajlovic said.
She added that with Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria there were „serious barriers“ at the borders affecting the competitiveness and development of the country.
The Minister announced that this year big infrastructural projects would begin that would better connect Serbia with the region, such as the construction of the highway from Belgrade to Sarajevo and from Nis to Merdare, as well as the reconstruction of the railway from Belgrade to Bar.
