EU expects Serbia to impose SANCTIONS on Russia

Spokesperson of the European Union, Ana Pisonero, has told the Nova.rs portal that the EU expects from Serbia to gradually harmonize with their foreign policy, which includes the introduction of restrictive measures, i.e. the introduction of sanctions against Russia.

When asked whether Serbia’s entry into the EU, i.e. accession negotiations, could be influenced by its position on the war in Ukraine and its refusal to impose sanctions on Russia, Pisonero replied that the decision on enlargement was in the hands of the member states.

She added that Serbia had identified accession to the Union as its strategic priority, and that the negotiating framework envisaged its gradual harmonization with the foreign policy of official Brussels.

„We expect it to gradually align its policy towards third countries with the policies and attitudes adopted by the EU, including regarding restrictive measures. Decisions on the next steps in terms of enlargement are in the hands of the member states“, Pisonero said.

Pisonero emphasized that Serbia had agreed with the Declaration of the EU High Representative, which strongly condemned the decision of Vladimir Putin to recognize Donetsk and Lugansk as independent entities, as well as the decision on sending Russian troops to these areas.

„Serbia also supported the United Nations General Assembly’s resolution on the aggression against Ukraine, condemning in the strongest terms the Russian Federation’s aggression against Ukraine. However, Serbia does not comply with the EU’s restrictive measures stemming from Russia’s military aggression against Ukraine“, Pisonero noted.
