Austrian railway carrier arrives in Serbia

The Austrian rail freight carrier plans to operate in Serbia as of next year. Namely, Rail Cargo, a subsidiary of the Austrian Railway (OBB), intends to start transporting cargo through its own company in Serbia at the beginning of the second quarter of 2023, announced Clemens Forst of Rail Cargo.

By doing so, Serbia will be the 13th country where the company carries out freight transport with its own locomotives and staff. Forst said OBB would thus be able to offer customers a second route towards Turkey and Greece, making it more crisis-resistant.

As of January 1, Rail Cargo will open its representative office in Shanghai and start operations, and the goal is to build the railway corridor of the „new Silk Road“.

At a press conference, Forst also announced that OBB would increase the prices of its services in Austria by an average of 20%, while for clients abroad the increase would be lower.

OBB Director Andreas Mattha said that rail freight traffic was facing a multiple crisis, that, in addition to inflation, it was facing the pandemic, climate crisis and delivery problems, and there were numerous construction sites on the railway network and road transport competition.
