Rio Tinto issues statement: WE ARE CONSIDERING legal basis for the Government’s decision

The Rio Tinto company has said that it is extremely concerned because of the statement of Prime Minister of Serbia, Ana Brnabic, that the spatial plan for the „Jadar“ project was abolished, and that all the administrative bylaws related to the project were being annulled.

During our work on the „Jadar“ project, we have always complied with the laws of the Republic of Serbia, it is stated in the press release.

Prime Minister of Serbia, Ana Brnabic, stated that the Government had decided to abolish the Regulation on the Special Purpose Spatial Plan for the „Jadar“ project.

Rio Tinto is considering the legal basis for making this decision and the implications it may have for our activities and our people in Serbia.

The Prime Minister also stated that she was not afraid of a possible lawsuit by Rio Tinto after the government’s decision to revoke all the permits regarding the lithium mining project in Jadar, the Beta agency reported.

She said at an extraordinary press conference that the government’s decision was final and that she did not want to discuss whether Rio Tinto would sue Serbia or not.

„I think that this decision is the right one and that it shows, once again, that we are listening to our people and that it is our job to protect their interests even when we have a somewhat different opinion,“ said the Prime Minister.
