WHEN THE EMBANKMENT COMES LATE: Nature was faster than the Corridors
During the collapse of the support wall on Corridor 10 in Grdelica Gorge, 100 meters of a protective slope collapsed, it was stated at a press conference, during which the wall kept collapsing.
Since Sunday, a total of about 100 meters of a protective slope collapsed, there is still a small part of the wall in the middle, and it is expected to also collapse.
Deputy Head of the Project „South“, Leonid Vukovic, said at a press conference that experts had been hired to see what kind of rehabilitation was possible. The reason for the collapse of the wall is being determined, and urgent meetings of all the relevant participants in the project were held.
Vukovic said that geodetic and stability measurements of the construction showed that it was overloaded, and that in June the company Koridori Srbije (Corridors of Serbia) decided to further stabilise part of the slope by constructing a protective wall and an embankment and that the works started five days ago.
„Unfortunately, the events have beat us to it,“ Vukovic said, pointing out that no worker had been injured, no damage had been caused to the machines and no material damage had been caused to third parties.
In June this year, additional stabilisation of protective slopes began, and they cover the area of about 155,000 square meters at the section of about 26 kilometres in length.
