Waiting for a new vehicle as long as a year

The pandemic and the war in Ukraine have slowed down the production and delivery of cars, so customers in Serbia are waiting from six months to a year, and prices are higher by up to 30% for both new and old vehicles, according to the representatives of car companies.

„The production of cars was first slowed down by the pandemic, and then by the war in Ukraine due to the lack of microchips, so we are waiting for delivery from six months to a year,“ Milan Belin, president of the Association of Motor Vehicle Importers, told Beta.

He said that the biggest microchip manufacturers are factories in the USA, China and Taiwan, which, due to the increased demand for computer microchips, since working from home became more massive due to the pandemic, have re-oriented towards the computer market.

An additional problem for reduced delivery of microchips, according to him, is that a factory in Japan that produced them burned down, and then the problem of the war in Ukraine arose, where there were also manufacturers of these auto components, as well as sanctions against Russia that stopped the import from that country, so European car manufacturers could not obtain parts.

Belin said that car production was 40% lower than demand and that prices increased little by little each month.
