Rain „flooded“ 100,000 tons of wheat

A total wheat yield in Serbia this year will be around 3.2 million tonnes instead of expected 3.3 million tonnes, i.e. lower by around 100,000 tonnes, due to rain, Association “Zita Srbije” reports.

Expected yield per hectare before the rain was around 5.1 tonnes, and now estimates show it will be around five tonnes, Director of the Association for Advancement in Production and Export of Wheat and Oil Seeds “Zita Srbije” Vukosav Savkovic stated with “Beta” agency. He said that harvest has not yet been completed, as on average more than 95 percent of sown areas have been harvested in Serbia, while around 99% of crops have been “removed” from arable land in Vojvodina, and around 90 percent in Central Serbia.

He pointed out that frequent rainfall also reduced the grain quality by around 60 percent of wheat yield in Serbia. „In this wheat the hectolitre mass has been reduced and grain germination has increased, because of which bread can be of poor quality,“ said Savkovic. According to him, wheat yield in Serbia this year is among better ones in the last decade, and data on quality analysis and overall yield are expected in ten days.
