Plum brandy, then naive art: Request to UNESCO for „Serbian plum brandy“

The Ministry of Culture of Serbia has submitted a request to UNESCO for including the plum brandy on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

During her speech in the Parliament, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Culture and Information, Maja Gojkovic, has said that the Ministry submitted a request for the inclusion of plum brandy on the UNESCO list of Intangible Cultural Heritage.

„We have just submitted our candidacy. When you praised us because our Serbian dance „kolo“ managed to enter the UNESCO list of protected intangible cultural heritage, we submitted our candidacy for plum brandy and I hope that next year we will be able to enrol, and then we will go for the candidacy of naive Slovak painting. We are working on that plan as well, quietly and steadily.

I am a person who likes to boast of the results I achieve and not the moves I make,“ said Gojkovic.

Plum brandy should be entered on the list as an element of social practice and knowledge related to the preparation and use of the traditional plum drink.

Plum brandy produced in our country received a certificate of geographical origin from the European Union in 2016 and it has had the protected name „Serbian plum brandy“ ever since.

The list of UNESCO from Serbia already includes the patron saint day, the kolo dance, singing with the gusle instrument and, last year, Zlakuska pottery.
