If we are to trust the minister, the workers in Bor should not be concerned

Serbian Minister of Mining and Energy, Aleksandar Antic, said today that there would be no layoffs from the Mining-Smelting Complex (RTB) Bor after it had been taken over by the Chinese company Zijin.

Antic told TV Prva, answering the question of whether 5,000 of current employees in RTB Bor is an excessive number and whether he expects layoffs, that he believed this number was realistic.

„This number of employees is realistic if we consider the announced investments and the opening of new mines, and it also represents the obligation of the foreign partner. The contract stipulates that for every employee under the number of 5000 employees (Zijin) is obliged to pay a fine amounting to two gross salaries to the budget of Serbia,“ explained Antic.

He also said that the announced recapitalization of Zijin was expected immediately after the conclusion of the agreement, and that after the takeover of the majority package, they expected the implementation of binding investments.

„In the next six years (the Chinese company) will invest 1.26 billion euros, which will make RTB a profitable company… I expect that Serbia will have 37 percent of this increased profit in its budget,“ Antic said.

The Chinese company Zijin was chosen by the Serbian government as a strategic partner in RTB Bor.
