    “Give me 20 cracked eggs”

Although official inflation is just over 15 percent, it is already clear to everyone that this does not represent the real situation in stores and at market stalls, where prices are several times higher than statistical data show.

Data on consumer prices of the Statistical Office for the last month of last year show that the prices of basic supplies exceeded 15.1 percent several times, which is officially the inflation rate in Serbia.

These include energy products and, of course, food, which rose in price by 24.3 percent year-on-year.Some everyday products, such as milk, cheese and eggs rose in price far above that percentage – as much as 43.3 percent. Thus, in some markets in Belgrade, an egg already costs about RSD 25.

However, for those who find eggs too expensive, there are ways to save money. Thus, cracked eggs are sold at the market at Banjica, and the price of an egg is RSD 16, so it is about 40 percent cheaper, and most interestingly, these eggs are in high demand.

“Please give me 20 cracked eggs,” a lady orders as she is looking at the refrigerator with eggs, in whose left corner there are cracked eggs that are sold at a much lower price.

It can be speculated about whether this is an isolated case or not, but the fact is that this egg vendor finds it “profitable” to occupy the sales space with “damaged” eggs and that they also bring him profit.

On the other hand, RSD 16 for an egg roughly coincides with the inflation rate of 15.1 percent. Eggs, therefore, rose in price in line with official inflation, they just “cracked” a bit along the way…
