    Few women and young people in MANAGERIAL roles

    The Commissioner for the Protection of Equality, Brankica Jankovic recommended that all municipalities and towns take measures and activities to ensure greater participation of women and youth in political and public decision-making at the local level, having in mind the upcoming elections at all levels, the commissioner’s office of announced. According to statement, women have been present far below 40 percent in all levels of the government and governance in Serbia, which is percentage that the Law on Election of Members of the Parliament stipulates as mandatory. An analysis made by the Office of the Commissioner showed that so far only 12 women have served as presidents of municipality, i.e. mayors. Only 14 percent of women were presidents of municipal/ town assembly, only 19 percent of women were members of municipal/town councils, while only 7.1 percent were presidents of local communities. „The results of a recent poll conducted by the Commissioner for the Protection of Equality show that only 1.8 percent of young people are at the position of municipality/town president, that there are no young people serving as mayors, and only five percent of councillors in municipal and town assemblies belong to the youth category,“ Jankovic pointed out according to a statement.
