First case of coronavirus confirmed in Serbia
The Minister of Health, Zlatibor Loncar has stated at an emergency press conference that the first case of coronavirus has been confirmed in Serbia. The man in question (age 43) is from Subotica and he resided in Budapest, and he reported himself to competent authorities. Loncar has said the infected man is feeling well and has no problems. He is in isolation at Subotica based hospital. All people who have been in contact with him have undergone medical analyses. His sister in Budapest where he resided had viral pneumonia. Loncar has said that the infected man behaved in a responsible manner, as he isolated children by sending them to their grandparents on the village, while his wife remained with him. The test positive to coronavirus has arrived tonight. Loncar has said that, as for competent services, everything was done by the book. He has repeated that there is no room for panic, and pledged citizens to comply with measures which will supress the virus. Epidemiologist Predrag Kon has said that the situation in Serbia is now new but fully expected, although he thought the first case would be recorded in Belgrade. He has pointed out that the system is functioning and that in this specific case the patient reported health issues himself. According to him, this means far greater engagement of the epidemiological service. Anyway, most countries in the region have recorded cases of coronavirus, and experts have indicated that there is a high probability of virus appearing in Serbia. The closest epicentre to us is in Italy and coronavirus spread from China.
