JTI: Japan in the Serbian business environment

Japan Tobacco International, the biggest Japanese investor in Serbia, recently launched a new production line at the Senta plant.

We talked to Director of Corporate Communications of JTI and Chairman of the Japanese Business Alliance in Serbia, Goran Pekez, about how he sees the business environment in Serbia and how to improve it.

„JTI is proof that it is possible to do business well and successfully in Serbia. There are challenges that the Japanese and Serbian governments have overcome. All in all, we are satisfied with the business operation in Serbia – we tripled the number of employees, we also tripled our share on the Serbian market. Japanese companies are interested in participating in this market, they realise that it is the central market in the CEFTA region which will join the EU one day. Every day, there are more and more delegations in Serbia, more and more of the new facilities and representative offices are opened. This is encouraging. With this wave, we hope that more concrete investments will be made in Serbia. I think Japanese companies are optimistic,“ says Pekez.

What would you tell those who are about to come to the Serbian market?

One should make a serious and persistent, long-term plan. The plan should persist for the next 15-20 years. No results are achieved overnight, all at once. Every day, small results are achieved, which, when combined, produce a fantastic overall result.
