IT industry export in the first half of this year reached a billion euros

The export of the IT industry in the first half of this year amounted to 1 billion euros, which is 10 percent of gross domestic product (GDP), State Secretary of the Ministry of Trade, Tourism and Telecommunications, Tatjana Matic, said today, adding that underdeveloped infrastructure was one of the biggest problems of digitalisation in Serbia .

At the fifth regional conference on trends in telecommunications „DIGITAL 2018“, Matic said that the export of the IT sector last year amounted to 900 million euros and that, based on the results in the first half of the year, a 30%-increase could be expected. According to her, inflows from the IT industry would be significantly higher if there was a more developed infrastructure.

She pointed out that one of the biggest challenges in the digitalisation process was the establishment of broadband Internet, which currently covers 60 percent of the territory (broadband internet is the name for Internet connectivity methods that allow high data transfer speed).

Matic said that an investment of EUR 110 million in broadband Internet would lead to the growth in the IT sector by 16%, which would enable GDP growth of 2 to 2.5%.
