FRAUD: Horse meat was SOLD as veal in Croatia
Horse meat listed on declaration as veal entered Croatia, Europol, which worked for six months on the investigation of trade in fake food products reported.
Horse meat was sold as veal in stores and on the Internet, revealed Europol, the EU agency that helps European countries in fight against the international crimes and terrorism.
„We regularly amend European laws, improve them and tighten them, in order to prevent food counterfeiting. Unfortunately, there are always those imaginative individuals who manage to find a way. They find some holes in the law,“ explains Biljana Borzan, member of the European Parliament.
In the action called „OPSON X“, which was carried out in Croatia and 72 other countries of the world from December 2020 until the end of June this year, almost 16,000 tons of goods were seized, i.e., unhealthy, spoiled or illegally processed food and beverages.
Apart from meat, the most „counterfeits“ in Croatia were found among alcoholic beverages – wine and vodka dominating.
