1.6 million pensioners in Serbia

The annual statistics of the Pension and Disability Insurance Fund show that from 2008 to the end of 2021, the number of self-employed pensioners doubled from 50,959 to 104,045, while the number of farmers receiving benefits dropped significantly from 222,986 to 150,601.

When it comes to the pensioners of the pension fund of employees, there is a standard growth. From 2008 to 2021, this number increased from 1,306,394 to 1,405,814 of the eldest.

When we look at the structure of pension beneficiaries, counting all categories, it is noticeable that the biggest decline was recorded in the number of disability pensioners. Thus, in 2008, their share in the total number of pensioners was 22.9 percent, and today about 15 percent.

The number of old-age pensioners grew from 55 percent to 64.9 percent, while the percentage of family pensions is almost identical to that of 13 years ago. At that time, the share of these pensioners in the total number was 22.1 percent, and today it is about 20 percent.

One pensioner per 1.7 employees

Interestingly, the trend in the ratio of the number of contributors (employees) to the number of pensioners remains far from ideal.

Namely, the elderly remember that there used to be one pensioner per three employees. However, in the meantime, that ratio has been reduced.In 2008, there were 1.8 pensioners per employee. Today the ratio is one to 1.7. In numbers, this is 1,660,460 pensioners per 2,758,893 insured persons.This ratio was significantly different from 2012 to 2016 when, for example, there were 1,420,892 pensioners and 2,053,249 insured persons, i.e. a ratio of 1 : 1.4.
