Wages drop from RSD 95,000 to 68,000: Metalfer’s workers go on strike in southern Serbia

Most workers of the metal company Metalfer in the village of Lece in the municipality of Medvedja have been on strike since September 16 due to a drastic decrease in salaries, Beta agency was told.

„Our salaries used to range from 80,000 to 95,000 dinars, and for two months they have ranged from 68,000 to 75,000 dinars. We believe that the reduction in salaries at a time when everything is increasing in prices is inadmissible,“ said one of 17 workers on strike out of a total of 25 employees.

The workers did not receive a response to the letter with the requests they sent to the officials in Sremska Mitrovica, where the company’s headquarters are located.

„In this request, we request the return of the salaries to the old amounts, but also the increase of meal allowances from 250 to 500 dinars and the payment for field work in the future, since we are sent to the field in Divcibare and Krupanj,“ said one of the workers on strike.

Director of Metalfer in Sremska Mitrovica, according to the secretary, was at a meeting and unavailable for journalists.

Since 2017, the company has been conducting geological explorations of mineral resources in the Medvedja municipality.
