In Serbia, 115,000 children live in absolute poverty

In Serbia, 115,000 children live in absolute poverty, while additional 30.2 percent of them are at the risk of dropping below the poverty line, UNICEF Office in Serbia announced.

Only half of the children in Serbia attend pre-school, and when it comes to the poorest children, this percentage is only nine percent, i.e. six percent when it comes to children from Roma settlements, the announcement says.

UNICEF pointed out that, despite the change in the attitudes towards children with developmental and physical disabilities, Serbia is still a country where these children, and especially children with a complex or severe form of disability, continue to be excluded.

The data also show that almost 60 percent of Roma girls are married before the age of 18, that only one fifth of Roma children attend high school, and that 32 percent of young Roma people may not be able to find a job.

At the same time, they note that significant progress has been made in Serbia in the past in terms of the implementation of the provisions of the Convention on the Rights of the Child because, as pointed out, today a child in Serbia „has a very good chance of surviving the first year of life, and almost 100% of children have excellent chances of attending primary school“.
