Economist: Serbia is still a flawed democracy

Serbia is still in the group of countries rated as flawed democracies, and its position has not changed in the past year, according to the latest report by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), a part of the Economist Group which deals with research and analyses.

In the report „Democracy Index 2018: Me too?“, which included 165 states and two territories, 20 countries were classified as full democracy, 55 as flawed democracy, 39 are in the group of hybrid regime, and 53 are authoritarian regimes.

Therefore, only 4.5% of the global population lives in full democracy. For the first time in three years, the Global Index of Democracy did not worsen in 2018, but there was no improvement either.

Serbia received a total of 6.41 points (10 is the maximum number of points), the same as in the previous year, so it is ranked 63rd on the global list, the same as Tunisia, and it is ranked eleventh at the regional level. Serbia got the highest points in the category of electoral process and pluralism – 8.25, and the least for political culture – 5.00 and the functioning of the government – 5.36.

Among the countries in the region, Croatia is ranked slightly better than Serbia with 6.57 points, while Albania is below with 5.98 points, Macedonia with 5.87, Montenegro with 5.74 and Bosnia and Herzegovina with 4.98 points .

On the global list of countries ranked according to the democracy index, there is no change – Norway is at the top again, and North Korea is at the bottom.
