DRI responds: EPS is the biggest industrial wastewater generator in Serbia

Elektroprivreda Srbije (EPS) is the biggest industrial wastewater generator in Serbia, the State Audit Institution (DRI) stated again.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, 3.6 billion cubic meters of industrial wastewater were discharged in 2020, of which 3.5 billion cubic meters were discharged by EPS, i.e. more than 95 percent, the DRI said.

The DRI thus denies the claims of EPS that the company was not the biggest industrial wastewater generator.

EPS has previously issued a statement, in reference to the recently published DRI report on the audit of the viability of the business operation „Industrial Wastewater Management“, which states that EPS is the biggest generator of industrial wastewater.

As determined by the state auditors, EPS did not build the wastewater treatment plant of the Thermal Power Plant „Nikola Tesla“ (TENT B) near Obrenovac, so wastewater is discharged without treatment into the Sava River, posing a risk to the environment.

EPS said that „the work of TENT B does not affect the quality of the Sava River and that upstream and downstream of the thermal power plant the ecological status of the river is good“.
