SASA to Vesic: GIVE the Fortress BACK to experts

The Department of Languages and Literature of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts (SASA) has requested the fate and appearance of the Belgrade Fortress and Belgrade to be brought back within the competence of experts. According to them, deputy mayor Goran Vesic, because of his determination to build a cable car with gondolas at the fortress, threatens to call into question the cultural-historical authenticity of the monument. His reaction to the courts and warnings by experts – whose arguments he qualifies as „hysteria“ – forces us to stand up, in the most determined manner possible, against letting the fate of historical and cultural monuments, and the identities of our cities be decided by the people whose ambitions and power are clearly at odds with their education, says the press release. The press release recalls Vesic’s interview with the Blic daily on 22 September, in which he stated that „Belgrade will have a cable car connecting Kalemegdan Park and Usce“. „No hysteria of an aggressive minority will stop this change,“ Vesic said at the time, according to a press release issued by the Department of Languages and Literature of the SASA. The SASA Department of Historical Sciences has strongly opposed the construction of a cable car with gondolas, which should be built between the Fortress, as Vesic says, Kalemegdan Park, and the left bank of the Sava River, the press release says.
