Pig plague again postpones the arrival of Tonnies in Serbia

German meat producer Tonnies again postponed the arrival in Serbia for a year. This time, the reason is the African swine fever which is spreading in the region. This is not the first time that the German giant has given up on the announced investment.

Thus, this year, once again, some municipalities in Vojvodina leased the land intended for Tonnies to Serbian farmers ,the Vecernje novosti daily reports.

The Investment Commission has approved a 1-year postponement to the Tonnies company, the Ministry of Agriculture says. The reason is the fact that African swine fever appeared in Europe.

This means that a large number of pigs and pork products should be transported here, but since there is a ban on their movement, they cannot be transported anywhere. The allocated land will be leased until the investment begins, the Ministry said.

The Memorandum with Tonnies was signed in 2015 and since then their arrival has been awaited in Serbia.
