Livestock breeding in Serbia faces problems: Livestock halved

In Serbia, livestock has been halved in the last 30 years.

It is especially worrying that the breeding herd is decreasing, so if urgent measures are not taken to stop this trend, it will take many years for livestock to recover, as experts and producers warn.

„There is an alarm that livestock farming in Serbia is in a deep crisis. Not only is the livestock intended for the market reducing, but also the basic breeding herd of basic types of livestock is decreasing. It is incomprehensible that this is happening in a country that is one of the ten biggest exporters of corn in the world „, said agricultural expert Milan Prostran.

Commenting on the data published by the  Statistical Office of the Republic of Serbia (RZS) on the reduction of livestock last year, he said that the true overview of the situation regarding livestock would only be obtained after the 2023 census, and it would not be better because the statistics published were based on estimates, and many facts indicated that the situation was worse.
