„Chatting“ about increasing minimum wage

Ministers of Labour and Finance Zoran Djordjevic and Sinisa Mali have started talks on a new minimum wage that should be determined in accordance with the law by 15 September at the latest, it was announced after the meeting.

The ministers expect to reach a consensus by that deadline on the new minimum wage of all three parties in the Social-Economic Council – trade unions, employers and the Government of Serbia.

It was announced that at the next session of the Social-Economic Council, the Government of Serbia would propose a new price for minimum wage. At the last session, seven days ago, Djordjevic said that the talks on a minimum wage proposal would take place in September.

Representative trade unions have announced they will request an increase in minimum wage by at least 10 percent, and by no more than 23 percent to 24 percent, while employers believe that a realistic increase is only the one that is in line with the growth in gross domestic product and inflation, which is below 10 percent.

The minimum wage in Serbia is currently RSD 24,882, and 350,000 workers receive it, of whom 30,000 are employed in the state administration.
