BIZLife list „30 under 30“: Marija Miljkovic, science (VIDEO)
Marija Miljkovic was born in 1988 in Leskovac. She completed her undergraduate and master studies at the Faculty of Biology, University of Belgrade. Since 2013 she has been employed at the Laboratory of Molecular Microbiology in the Institute of Molecular Genetics and Genetic Engineering (IMGGI), the University of Belgrade. She defended her doctoral thesis titled „Characterization of AggLb Aggregation Factor of the species Lactobacillus paracasei subsp. paracasei BGNJ1-64” in 2016 at the same faculty. She is the winner of an award presented by “Goran Ljubijankic” Foundation for best master and doctoral thesis in the field of molecular biology. During 2015, thanks to the FEMS scholarship (Federation of European Microbiological Societies), she attended Dr. Vittorio Venturi laboratory in Trieste (Bacteriology group, International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology). As a scholar of the Ministry of Education, Science and Technological Development for postdoctoral training abroad, she attended the laboratory of Dr. Muriel Thomas (Micalis, National Institute for Agricultural Research) in Paris during 2017. She is the winner of national scholarship for 2018 – „For Women in Science“ in Serbia, supported by the Ministry of Education, Science and Technological Development, the National Commission for Cooperation with UNESCO and L’Oreal Balkan. She is a member of the Serbian Association of Microbiologists, the American Society for Microbiology and the Serbian Society for Molecular Biology. Marija also works as youth ambassador of the American Society for Microbiology to Serbia. So far she has published 17 research papers, while on international congresses she has presented 13 announcements. She is currently engaged in research aimed at identifying and characterizing new antimicrobial molecules with inhibitory effect on pathogenic bacteria, as well as studying the mechanism of their effect.
