„1,700 more people died in Serbia in July than in the same month of 2019“

In Serbia, 960 more people died in the first seven months than in the same period last year, and in July alone, when the highest number of coronavirus infections and deaths was recorded, 1,700 more people died than in the same month of 2019, the Politika daily reports today.

Referring to the data of the Statistical Office of the Republic of Serbia, the daily reported that 10,023 people died in July, which is 1,317 more than in January and about 900 more than in February.

„In the first five months of this year, there were 1,360 fewer deaths than in the same period last year. From January 1 to June 1 this year, 43,244 people died and in the same period last year, 44,604 people. „In April this year, when the covid 19 pandemic reached its peak, there were 369 more deaths than last year, while in May the number of deaths was lower by 348 than in the same month last year,“ the daily reported.

It is also stated that since the beginning of the year, the highest number of deaths has been recorded in Belgrade and the regions of Western Serbia and Sumadija, and, compared to the first seven months of last year, the number of deaths in the capital increased by five percent, while the number of deaths in the Sumadija region increased by 3.6 percent.

„It should be borne in mind that the largest clinical centers are located in these regions, where most people are treated and pass away, therefore, the highest number of mortality is recorded,“ said Gordana Bjelobrk, Head of the Demography Department of the Statistical Office of the Republic of Serbia.

The data also show that 35,210 babies were born in the first seven months, which is 626 fewer than in the same period last year, i.e. that 1.7 percent fewer babies were born and 1.6 percent more people died than last year.
